Angular Pseudomomentum Theory for the Generalized Nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger Equation in Discrete Rotational Symmetry Media

2009

We develop a complete mathematical theory for the symmetrical solutions of the generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation based on the new concept of angular pseudomomentum. We consider the symmetric solitons of a generalized nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a nonlinearity depending on the modulus of the field. We provide a rigorous proof of a set of mathematical results justifying that these solitons can be classified according to the irreducible representations of a discrete group. Then we extend this theory to non-stationary solutions and study the relationship between angular momentum and pseudomomentum. We illustrate these theoretical results with numerical examples. Finally, we…

Numerical study of the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution

2020

We generalise a previously published approach based on a multi-domain spectral method on the whole real line in two ways: firstly, a fully explicit 4th order method for the time integration, based on a splitting scheme and an implicit Runge--Kutta method for the linear part, is presented. Secondly, the 1D code is combined with a Fourier spectral method in the transverse variable both for elliptic and hyperbolic NLS equations. As an example we study the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution, an exact solution to the one dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation and thus a $y$-independent solution to the 2D NLS. It is shown that the Peregrine solution is unstable against all…

On universality of critical behavior in the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, elliptic umbilic catastrophe and the Tritronquée solution to the…

2008

We argue that the critical behavior near the point of “gradient catastrophe” of the solution to the Cauchy problem for the focusing nonlinear Schrodinger equation \(i\epsilon \varPsi _{t}+\frac{\epsilon^{2}}{2}\varPsi _{xx}+|\varPsi |^{2}\varPsi =0\) , e ≪1, with analytic initial data of the form \(\varPsi (x,0;\epsilon)=A(x)e^{\frac{i}{\epsilon}S(x)}\) is approximately described by a particular solution to the Painleve-I equation.
